Clevedon 38 Wellington 14

A powerful performance from the pack and some lovely running rugby from the backs ensured that the young Seasiders ended the first half of the season with a proud unbeaten home record.

It took a wee while for the boys to warm up on a grey, cold morning with an early string of handling errors and a tendency to stand off at the breakdown leading to some frustrations from the coaching staff and boys alike. A glimpse of the backs potential was seen after just five minutes when a flowing move and some perfectly timed passes led to a try for Jamie Sandy in the corner which was converted.

But it took another quarter of an hour for the boys to really click into gear and when they did they ran in three tremendous tries in the five minutes before half time through Harry Lyon, Jamie again and Dane with Ethan landing another two conversions for a half time lead of 26-0. All three tries featured some tremendous handling and interplay throughout the team and were a joy to watch.

Clevedon started the second half playing into a stiff breeze and heading up the gentle slope but showed no concern for those impediments with a try from Harry Lyon within a minute of the restart to increase the lead to 31 points. Wellington battled gamely throughout and were rewarded with a well deserved try of their own, converted by their fly half.

Dane was increasingly influential in the second half making large inroads into the opposition territory every time he received the ball and, from one such run, a weak tackle enabled him to break away and run unopposed under the posts from where Ethan converted. Wellington battled back once again though and an interception try and conversion reduced the deficit to 38-14.

It looked as if that deficit was to be reduced further in the final play when they broke clear and looked certain to score after some neat footballing skills from one of their backs but Harry Williams played a captain's role in showing great pace, strength and desire to dive in and prevent the touchdown.

A few stats heading into Christmas - the six home games have resulted in six victories with 296 points rattled up! Across all fixtures there's a great battle hotting up for top try scorer with Dane and Harry Lyon both on 13, McKenzie on 12 and Luke McLaughlin not far away on 9. In addition, Ethan has now broken through the 100 point barrier in just 8 appearances.

But, first and foremost, rugby is a team game and none of the above would be possible without the efforts of an increasingly impressive pack and all members of a squad growing in both numbers, ability and confidence.
