A brave and committed performance from Clevedon RFC Under 14’s was unfortunately not enough to see them book a place in the County Cup final. Their semi-final at North Petherton was played out to a backdrop of constant torrential rain and strengthening winds which impacted the side’s traditional running game. Both sides enjoyed periods in the ascendancy during an attritional battle but both defences held firm heading into half time. Defence continued to be the theme in the second half with Luke Palmer to the fore at full back making a series of tremendous tackles whenever North Petherton broke through the first line. Clevedon had a couple of chances of their own but the occasional spilled ball or misplaced pass denied them the opportunity to open the scoring.
Entering into the final quarter and it was the impressive home side who struck first with a well worked try under the posts. Clevedon were then forced to try and run from deep in an attempt to draw level in worsening conditions but, late on, some tired defending allowed North Petherton to cross for the deciding score and a deserved 14-0 victory.
Some lessons to be learned for the team, including when to attempt to play running rugby and when to play the percentages in difficult conditions but, overall, a really gutsy effort from each and every one of the lads who should take great pride in making it into the last four of the County Cup.
Finally, hearty congratulations to the very hospitable North Petherton from all at Clevedon RFC.
