3 Shredded Wheat and Red Bull

Last year saw a very competitive and heated game against our friends from down the motorway, and therefore I looked forward to much same again.

However today, unusually, we had obviously had our breakfast of 3 Shredded Wheat and Red Bull!!! We flew out of the blocks which saw Rich and Big Mac scorch through in the first couple of minutes giving the guys the impression they were in for an easy ride. This was certainly not the case as Bridggy woke up and suddenly we were in a much tighter battle. The more competitive nature of the game gave birth to some fantastic passing and unselfish creative play from all quarters which ultimately led to 2 of the new recruits notching their first trys in Clevedon colours. Tom “The Bomb” Lee boshing his way across the line in the dying seconds. However the pick of the trys went to Man of the match Mini Mac. After some great team play, he “ninja robbed” a six foot Bridgewaterian before scooting past 3 diving defenders and touching down with one outstretched arm! This was the sort of finishing worthy of Leigh Halfpenny not a cheeky footballer who only turned up a few months ago! Well done bud, first of many I think.

In all honesty I could pick out each and every player and praise their performance. The fact is every player tackled, everyone passed and everyone was positive........there’s a word for that – TEAMWORK. At long last, we are starting to play like a team! Could we tackle more? Could we tackle harder? Could we pass more? Could we be more positive? Could we work harder? YES of course, we are far from perfect but we’ve started to play as a team and I cannot express how important that is. Rugby is won by the best team, not the best collection of individual players. Thanks to all the players it was a pleasure to watch and I had a pretty big grin on my face all afternoon. However you are only as good as your last result and we need to take all our improvements, build on them and make sure we continue in the same fashion next time. If we do, we will soon start to topple the big guns!

Unfortunately Avonmouth are unable to play us this weekend (as previously arranged ) so we will take advantage of the free time for a long overdue training session, where we can build on the progression of last week. Let’s come with the right attitude and enjoy it.
