Former Clevedon Coach and Wales International Mark Jones Passes Away at 59

Anthony Dauncey23 May - 12:38

The rugby community is mourning the loss of Mark Jones, a former Clevedon Rugby Club coach and Wales international.

Jones, a dual-code rugby legend, made his mark in both rugby union and rugby league, earning 15 caps for Wales in union before switching to league, where he represented Wales and Great Britain. Known for his uncompromising playing style, Jones was a force on the field, playing for clubs such as Neath, Hull, Warrington, and Ebbw Vale.
Beyond his playing career, Jones dedicated himself to coaching, including a stint at Clevedon Rugby Club, where he was admired for his leadership and passion for the sport. His influence extended internationally, coaching in the Middle East and mentoring young players.
Tributes have poured in from across the rugby world, with former teammates and clubs remembering Jones as a true warrior of the game. Neath RFC described him as a "real force of nature," while Ebbw Vale RFC called him a "legend whose passing leaves an unfillable hole in our hearts".
Clevedon Rugby Club’s Director of Rugby, Tony Dauncey, also shared his memories of Jones, saying:
"I appointed Mark as Coach in my first stint as Director of Rugby in 2007. He would drive from Aberavon to take training, and what he said went. This meant that despite being retired, I ended up playing alongside him vs Reading, Mounts Bay, and Weston-super-Mare. He was a great bloke and a very tough man."
Jones' legacy will live on through the players he coached, the teams he inspired, and the memories he created on the pitch. The rugby world bids farewell to a remarkable player, coach, and mentor.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
