CLEVEDON booked their place in the final of the Bristol Combination Vase with a scrappy yet comfortable victory over a resolute Winscombe side.

Mike Taylor crossed twice for the visitors as well as adding seven points with the boot to return a 17-point tally, while Alex Giltrow also crossed for his third try of this season’s competition.

They face Bristol Saracens in the final, which is provisionally scheduled for Thursday, April 2.

Clevedon started the game at a frantic pace against their Somerset Premier Division opponents, and after Taylor had been wide of the mark from a 30-metre penalty, he soon opened the scoring with a try in the right-hand corner.

An initial break by fly-half Will Carpenter put Foley in the clear – and his neat offload found full-back Price who was felled just inside the 22. But following strong work from the pack, Clevedon worked the blindside to put Taylor over in the corner.

The conversion rebounded off the crossbar, but Taylor added to his tally with a straight forward penalty on the 20 minute mark.

Winscombe were soon off the mark with a penalty of their own – and the final ten minutes of the half saw Clevedon slip into a sloppy period, with loose offloads and stray passes halting any further momentum.

Giltrow eventually caught the Winscombe defence napping with the final play of the first-half, to power over from a quickly taken penalty, with Taylor adding the conversion.

After the break, Winscombe began to show just why they are pushing for honours in Somerset Premier with a lively opening 20 minutes.
They went close with a series of driving mauls, but Clevedon held out to keep their line intact – and soon put the game to bed with a third try of the afternoon.

Sharp work from Mortimore put the visitors on the front foot, before Carpenter released Ashfield, who in turn fed Taylor with the most delicate of offloads, to score in the left-hand corner.

Taylor notched the conversion from out wide to complete his 17-point haul, but that was to be the last of the Clevedon scoring.

Instead it was Winscombe who dominated the final 20 minutes and they were duly rewarded with a try from close range late on, after the referee had sent Jon Shepherd to the sin-bin – the substitute eventually paying for a whole host of infringements from his teammates.

Clevedon travel to Avonmouth on Saturday.
