Sea-Siders take the spoils in dramatic fashion on the Mendips

Clevedon travelled across the mendips with an injury list longer than there available list and a very clear game plan, Veteran prop Ben Stone came out of retirement and another Veteran Prop, Bosley joined Jones on the Bench, McGuigan moved from Centre to Back row and young Archie Birbeck came into the side for his debut at fullback.
The Game started in familiar fashion as a rare scrum loss gave MSN possession on the 22, the hosts buoyed by a large partisan crowd kicked for corner and frustratingly for Clevedon after a couple of phases a defensive lapse left a huge gap for the 9 to walk through, just 60 seconds later an ambitious pass was picked off and the writing was on the wall for the visitors 5 minutes in and 12 – 0 down.
Midsomer came again but the Clevedon defence held strong with skipper Charlie Tucker and Centre Wingrove particularly showing up in defence, eventually this D forced a knock on and it was time for Clevedon to get a foothold in the game, solid set piece and good patterns forced a penalty and Clevedon worked there way up field, a line out was forced on the 5 and after a drive Thomas ghosted in to close the scores to 12-7 (Birbeck converting).
Clevedons defence and scrum were now getting dominance and from a strong set piece Kipp Commrie was first to a clearance kick, after a flyhack and a strong chase he field position and after concerted pressure Wingrove ghosted through a gap to cross from 20 yards 12-14.
The home side came back at the vistors in blue and gold with a sustained spell of pressure , this led to McGuigan seeing yellow after halting a quick tap penalty, MSN then went other to rub salt into the wounds. Clevedons pack were now starting to dominate the set piece and with half time approaching a scrum 5 yards out was stopped illegally by the home team and a quick tap penalty saw Fisher force the ball over the line from the quick tap taking it to 19-19 at half time.
Starting the 2nd half a man short Clevedon were immediately dealt a blow when a speculative kick wasn’t cleared up and MSN crossed in the first minute, Clevedon new the answer now and more dominant defensive work saw a penalty earned, from the resultant lineout high flying George Angel won clean ball and Tom O’Connell was on hand to score from the drive.
Clevedon were now steam rollering the home pack and from a MSn scrum in there own 22 Clevedon drive them off the ball, strong attacking play from Fear, Tucker and Lugtig created great ball before Largenton crashed over to stretch the visitors lead. Clevedon then suffered a double injury blow with Joey Tucker succumbing to a hamstring tear with the line at his mercy and they now had 6 props on the field with 25 minutes to go. More dominant scrum play from Clevedon earned the chance to close the game out however Fisher was held up over the line and from the resultant phases the home side came back into the game and levelled the scores in the 72nd minute.
With 7 minutes to go it looked like the seasiders had blown it as captain Tucker left the field injured Commrie saw yellow and from the resulting penalty Norton went 34- 31 ahead. However the Clevedon side are showing more character every week, a superb defensive play by Wills saw , Jones, Angel and fear link up to gain good ground, then a kick from Thomas saw McGuigan and Bosley force a penalty deep into the opposition half, 3 points down and with players cramping all over the park , 3 points and a draw didn’t appeal to the boys in blue and gold and a familiar line out routine forced a free kick from the home team. From the resulting scrum , with Largenton at 8 and deep into injury time the dominant Clevedon pack marched Norton over there own try line and Fisher was on hand to touch down, jubilant scenes from Clevedon and some choice words from the home crowd followed as our boys travelled home with all 5 points.
Clevedon have plenty of learnings from this game and will need to heed them if they are to be competitive against table toppers Nailsea and Backwell at home next weekend, hopefully with a couple of returning players.
Tries – Thomas, Wingrove, Fisher 2, O’Connell, Largenton
Cons – Birbeck 3
Player (s) of match – The Pack, utterly dominated the home team in the set pieces.
