CLEVEDON squandered a 17-5 lead to slip to a fourth defeat of the season at home to Wells on Saturday.

First-half tries from Aaron Rice and Chris Warren had put Clevedon into a deserved lead, but a combination of ill discipline and unforced errors saw Wells fight their way back into the game, to leave the hosts with just a losing bonus-point to their name.

Rice crossed for his second try late in the second-half as Clevedon began to mount a comeback, but the clock was against them and they were once again left to rue what might have been.

The hosts started brightly and an early spell of possession and territory forced a penalty, which Taylor duly slotted from close range.
But Wells hit back and scored their first try of the afternoon on 15 minutes, courtesy of a well executed cross-field kick.

Next came Clevedon's purple patch, as first Rice and then Warren crossed in quick succession to put the home side into a commanding lead.

Centre Rice powered his way over from close range following a quickly taken penalty by Josh Mortimer, before Harvey Russell scythed through the Wells defence and fed the supporting Warren, who sprinted away to score.

Shortly before half-time Taylor was sin-binned for an alleged deliberate knock-on - and from the resulting penalty, the visitors drove their way over the line to reduce the deficit.

The momentum was now with the away side and they added a penalty and a drop goal early in the second-half to retake the lead.

They scored their third try on the hour mark with another cross field kick - this time more speculative - but the bounce evaded the covering Clevedon defence and Wells found themselves 11 points up.

The home side rallied and with five minutes left to play, Rice crashed crashed through the defence to touch down under the sticks, with Taylor adding the conversion.

But Clevedon ran out of time and the final whistle condemned them to a four-point defeat.

They host Old Reds this weekend in the quarter-final of the Somerset Cup, KO 3pm.
