Not Our day ...

CLEVEDON 1ST XV.17PTS. V OKEHAMPTON 1ST XV 34PTS.
Clevedon fielding a young inexperienced team gave a sound performance bearing in mind that 10 of last seasons team have departed. A shoulder injury in the 1st minute to Joe Ford was not the start that Clevedon wanted but it gave the opportunity for Jack Crew, a last years colt to make his debut and was one of the leading lights. Okehampton took an early lead with a good try wide out but Clevedon soon hit back with a penalty by Adam Cole the new 17 year old fly half. After a period of sustained pressure Clevedon then took the lead when debutant Adam Cole went over for a try from close range which he duly converted for 10-5. Clevedon continued to press but good defence by the visitors kept them at bay. On the stroke of half time, against the run of play, Okehampton took the lead with a try from close range which was converted for 10-12.
The second half was much the same to start with but Clevedon conceded an early penalty for the visitors to extend their lead to 10-15. The Seasiders never gave up and built pressure in the oaks half but on more than one occasion poor ball retention let them down and it was Okehampton who scored again when they capitalised on a lost Clevedon lineout and sloppy defence led to a converted try. Back came Clevedon when the outstanding Cameron Maslen intercepted a pass to race in under the posts fand Adam Cole again converted for 17-22. With a third of the game still to play Clevedon appeared to run out of steam and allowed Okehampton to clinch the victory.
Head Coach Nick Hill commented "The score line flatters them a little, we were in the game for 60 minutes but fell away conceding some soft tries. Its a period of transition at the moment, with a new look side of youth and experience and we are probably a few weeks behind where we would like to be but we will be working hard to build on the positives".
Next Saturday Clevedon are away at Teignmouth k.o.3.p.m.Coach leaves 11.00 am.
