1st Team Lose On The Road

Clevedon came up against a very well drilled youthful University side, the students ability to train as a unit all week certainly showed early as they cruised into a 14 point lead inside ten minutes and it was another fifteen minutes before the seasiders got into their half. Clevedon's scrum was once again effective putting the students under pressure but sadly the lineout did not function which in turn meant very little good quality ball and with the students running wild they scored another four tries to go into the break 45-nil up.

The second half did see some improvement as Clevedon built phases and threatened the students line and twice were denied by the final pass and from such a passage came the students next try when the ball was turned over. Clevedon replied with their first try of the day when Harley Foley grounded the ball from a push over. This definitely lifted the seasiders, who saw Brian Largenten running hard and offload for Tom Thie to score a try which he also converted. The seasiders scored again through replacement Danny Williams who burst through the students defence to score Clevedon's third try, converted by Tom Thie. The students added two late conv trys to put the result beyond any doubt. The last couple of minutes saw Clevedon searching for a bonus point fourth try but an inability to execute a simple two on one denied them.

Head coach Nick Hill commented 'a trip to top of the league was never going to be easy, particularly when we were still on the bus for the first half, so winning the second half is scant consolation'.
