Chewed Up By Chew !

A slow start was to prove costly on a tough afternoon for a Clevedon. Chew came out of the blocks fast and were 14 points up in the first ten minutes , first through a catch and drive which was poorly defended and followed by a fine solo try from the visiting fullback who ran from inside his own half avoiding all Clevedons would be tacklers to score a converted try. The seasiders then woke up and started to build momentum and rewarded with a penalty converted by Adam Coles. From the restart Clevedon drove hard into the Chew half and should have scored again but poor decision making allowed Chew to turn the ball over. Chew now came back at the seasiders but good defence and the benefit of a strong scrum gave Clevedon a penalty which saw the powerful Brian largenten surge up the pitch and after the ball was recycled live wire Toby Ford crashed over for a try converted by Coles. Halftime Chew led 14-10 After the break Clevedon came under pressure when a failure to secure a kick off saw the seasiders camped in their own red zone but after more than ten minutes Chew failed to capitilze and it was Clevedon who scored the first points of the half when after a series of powerful scrums Harvey Russel dived over to give the seasiders the lead for the first time 15-14.From the restart Clevedon recycled the ball and a loose kick saw the visitors run it back with interest and score a converted try 21-15 The game was still anyones at this point and Clevedon once again tested the Chew defence which held firm and it was them who scored again to settle the argument and leave the seasiders empty handed. Head coach Nick Hill commented it was disappointing you cant give a side like Chew valley a 14 point head start , I cannot knock the effort the lads showed but we allowed them too much space at times and they punished us for it. We will keep working hard.
