CLEVEDON produced their strongest performance of the season to see off Bideford in scintillating style and secure a seventh successive victory.

The hosts ran in six tries to record only their second try bonus-point of the season, courtesy of a hat-trick from centre Dean Ashfield, who was at the heart of an impressive team performance.

Mike Lowis also crossed twice, while Harley Foley completed the rout – Mike Taylor kicked 14 points to take his season tally to 194 points.

A storming start from the home side set the tone for the afternoon, in dry and still conditions at Coleridge Vale.

Ashfield opened his account on six minutes, as he and Taylor linked up superbly in the midfield to free up space before finishing with an outstretched arm.

Taylor converted and added a penalty to extend the hosts’ advantage, before he once again turned provider – coming into the line from the left-wing to put full-back Lowis away in the right-hand corner.

Clevedon could and perhaps should have banked the bonus-point before half-time, with both Davis and Ashfield going close to increasing the advantage.

Instead, it was Bideford who had the final say of the half, slicing through the midfield from a well-worked move to cross under the posts for a converted score.

Shortly after the break, Taylor added a second penalty to make the score 18-7 – and it wasn’t long before the hosts found top gear to cross for the try of the afternoon.

Smart work in the lineout saw Clevedon steal a Bideford throw, and when the ball reached the backline, Carpenter’s backhand pass found Biggins who in turn put Tom Thie into space. His inside pass found Ashfield, who once again powered his way through a tackle for his second of the afternoon.

It wasn’t long before the try bonus point was secured, as Ashfield intercepted 40 metres out to run in his third of the afternoon and his fifth in seven games since returning from injury.

A powerful run from the outstanding Chris Warren, later voted man of the match, soon took play into the Bideford 22 – and further pressure at the breakdown saw the visitors infringe and Taylor kick to the corner.

From the resulting lineout, a strong driving maul saw Foley cross for Clevedon’s fifth – and Lowis put the icing on the cake with a sixth on 79 minutes, latching on to a sublime offload from Rory Biggins to touch down under the posts.

In between, Bideford added a consolation courtesy of a driving maul, but it wasn’t enough to take the gloss off of an impressive display from the home side.
