THREE second-half tries fired Clevedon to a hard-fought bonus-point victory over Wells at Coleridge Vale on Saturday.

Jack Williams, Josh Mortimore and Tom Thie touched down for the hosts in a whirlwind second period, after prop Brian Largenton had powered his way over the whitewash midway through the first-half.

Mike Taylor added two conversions and a penalty for Clevedon, who leapfrog Wells into ninth place in South West One West.

After a scrappy opening quarter, Taylor slotted home a 30 metre penalty to give Clevedon a slender lead – but it was Wells who crossed for the afternoon’s opening try on 23 minutes, courtesy of a well-worked driving maul.

It didn’t take Clevedon long to respond and they soon restored their lead through Brian Largenton, who crashed over from close range following a strong run from Jack Williams – Taylor added the extras for a 10-5 half-time score.

The second-half began with Wells in the ascendency, but their endless spree of hard-runners continued to be hit back by a resolute Clevedon defence.

Having soaked up a barrage of early pressure, Clevedon stormed into action with two tries in five minutes.

First, wing Tom Thie provided a classy finishing touch to a sweeping backs move - which saw Carpenter free up Taylor, whose clinical pass put Thie away in the left-hand corner.

Minutes later, Jack Williams was on hand to finishing another neat handling move, latching on to Owen Biggins’ overhead pass to dot down for Clevedon’s third with Taylor adding the extras from out wide.

Back came Wells with fine individual effort from Alex Knight, who ran in from 40 metres after Clevedon had switched off from a quickly taken penalty.

But Josh Mortimore’s try put the game to bed for Clevedon and in doing so sealed a fourth try bonus-point of the season for the Seasiders – bursting through two tackles to finish brilliantly in the corner.

It was the visitors who had the final say, with Lewis Cohen barging his way over from ten metres for Wells’ third try of the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Clevedon from clinching a tenth league win of the season – one more will mathematically secure their place in the division for another season.

Clevedon host Cullompton next Saturday, 2.30pm kick-off.
